Released: February 1, 1977 (Italy)

Giallo master Dario Argento returns after the success of Profondo Rosso (aka Deep Red) with a more sinister plot, laced with the supernatural in a coven of witches. What ensues is the ‘Three Mothers’ trilogy of films, an occult tale of alchemists and sorcery hiding in plain sight. Jessica Harper (Phantom Of The Paradise) plays Suzy Bannion, a ballet student who uncovers a deadly secret in a Freiburg ballet academy run by Dark Shadows star Joan Bennett in her last screen appearance. Susie is aided by none other than a dashing Udo Kier (Blood For Dracula, Flesh For Frankenstein), while her schoolmate ally discovers a razor wire storage room in the attic and promptly expires there. Argento dazzles with a mix of chiaroscuro and brilliant primary colors, not to mention a score masterfully laid down once more by Goblin. Suspiria still stands as a classic in horror film. While its successor ‘Inferno’ doesn’t receive equal accolades, it makes for a compelling story. Sadly, we had to wait more than twenty five years for the third installment ’Mother Of Tears’ which failed to capture the ambition of the trilogy. In 2018, a remake was attempted, but should be avoided.
