One of the later entries in Lucio Fulci’s illustrious giallo career, Aenigma boasts some of the most fantastic and imaginative death scenes of any of them. A supernatural take on the vengeance films like ‘Night Train Murders‘ and ‘Last House On The Left’, it introduces a more bizarre take not limited to zombies or the razor-wielding psychopath. The villain here is a comatose young girl, bent on destroying the lives of the ones who put her there. Murder by a double produced by mirror reflection, statue, and even SNAILS! While the production quality is not up to Fulci’s earlier masterpieces ‘Zombi 2’ and ‘The Beyond’, it still manages to deliver some ghastly imagery. The dialogue is weak and certain plot points are vague, but such is often the case with giallo films. It’s certainly worth a watch.
