Einstürzende Neubauten

Location: Berlin, Germany

Active: 1980 – present

Blixa Bargeld and unconventional percussionist Nu Unruh formed the band with Mania D members Beate Bartel and Gudrun Gut in 1980. Gudrun departed the band to form Malaria, and Bartel started Liaisons Dangereuses. In 1981, the band regrouped with Alexander Hacke (who had released some tapes as Alexander Von Borsig), F.M. Einheit and Mark Chung, both of German punk band Abwärts. Neubauten pioneered industrial and experimental noise with their anti-pop sound style. Bargeld shrieked, shouted and wailed into the microphone and tortured his guitar, while the band utilized self-made instruments and repurposed metal objects for their equipment. They released their debut LP Kollaps in 1981 on ZickZack Records.

In 1983, they branched out by collaborating with bands like Fad Gadget and The Birthday Party. Blixa Bargeld joined Nick Cave in his post-Birthday Party band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds remaining for many years until 2003.

In 1996, Die Haut members Jochen Arbeit and Rudolph Moser came aboard filling the gap left by Chung and Einheit in 1994. Australian artist Ash Wednesday (Modern Jazz, Theolonian Music, The Metronomes) also joined in as a touring musician.

Einstürzende Neubauten’s sound has developed steadily over their career from antagonistic noise to sleek ballads, but always with a focus on the avant-garde and new ways to explore conventional and not so conventional sounds, spaces and media. They have been recognized as one of Germany’s and the world’s foremost experimental artists.
