Cinema Strange

Location: Camarillo, California

Active: 1994 – 2006

Emerging from the wilds of California north of Los Angeles in the mid 90s, Cinema Strange brought back to gothic and deathrock an element of fantasy and dark glamour that was long since fading from the genre. Most bands had gone either rock, industrial or synthpop, copying dull heroes like Sisters Of Mercy, Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode – or worse. With Cinema Strange, it was not only back to the roots of bands like Specimen, Sex Gang Children and Christian Death.

The core lineup was Lucas Lanthier, Daniel and Michael Ribiat, sometimes joined by drummers like Danny Walker and others like Colin Ambulance (Bite Marx). Their debut self-titled album was released in 2000, introducing a brand new generation of young goths to a revitalized batcave scene. Two more albums followed, supported by multiple tours primarily in Europe, but by 2006 they had disbanded. Lucas continued with Deadfly Ensemble and as a solo artist. In 2024 he returned to performing Cinema Strange material for a limited number of engagements as Lucas Lanthier and His Esteemed Colleagues.
