DR: Lets start at the beginning; what was the impetus for the band starting?
Kristin: Well we were both playing music already, and then we kinda fell in love, and instead of "trying" to start a band or just fucking around with shit, we decided to make real slow tinker-tinker keyboard music, and that was 16 speed. That was the beginning. Then we had this whole great tarot day of finding the name of the band from this slide that we found on the street, and we found this record player that played 16s. The name needed to be nice and generic, but have some sort of meaning, too. Just because names are so… You know.
DR: Well if that was the beginning, now bringing things current, what have been some of the more significant changes along the way?
Aaron: That's strange because there's been so many. I think that the most significant change, recently, is that its just me and Kristen playing; There's no longer a third person anymore. That's been an immense change compared to what the bands been through in the past.
Kristin: Kind of back to the beginning, in a way. But then also not wanting to just stay and be a local band. Wanting to travel, and bring that to other places, even if we don't have any money and we're doing it all yourselves. All those things we've done and back, that's changed everything.
Aaron: Touring so much, being in other countries, playing every single day. That's probably the most significant thing. It's really strange to do that.
DR: What kind of experiences have you picked up from being on the road?
Aaron: Just being able to be very resourceful as far as technical problems go, and socially running into all sorts of different people you learn how to deal with just about anyone.
Kristin: That's also why its just us again. There's this huge test that happens being around people like that and living like that. You pretty much have to be die-hard about it or you're out. It's something that you either get off on and you feel like its making some kind of impact on people or don't. You have to continue but the hardest thing about it is compatibility.
DR: So how long did you go as a two-piece before adding a third member?
Kristin: It wasn't that long.
Aaron: Maybe a couple of months? 3 or 4 months?
Kristin: Aaron asked Nick to play drums. I'd lived with him for a few years. He didn't even play drums either, so it was perfect! He'd been on some labels and did a lot of music, mostly guitar.
Aaron: The first record that we put out on our own has his drums on it. His drum playing was very almost like a drum machine; it was perfect for our music. He'd play a simple beat and then switch to another simple beat. Very machine-like!
